What DCC Controler ?

#1

Post by FattishBoy »

Hi Folks, can anyone recommend a good DCC Controler, something that can run three trains at the same time.
Thanks.

I think you will find all DCC controllers can run 3 trains simultaneously it will be more a case of you being able to keep track of what is going on ('scuse the pun).

As for your other question I am afraid you will probably get a lot of people claiming their particular controller is the best thing since sliced bread which probably for them is correct. Controllers are very much a personal preference and the best thing to do is get round either a few shows or model shops and try to get some hands on experience of what's on offer. Digitrains attend quite a few shows and usually bring along a selection of controllers to try out.

To get the ball rolling, I have a Lenz LH 100 which is pretty well bomb proof but depending on how much you want to control through DCC can be a bit fiddly button pressing wise if you go beyond simple train control. If I was starting out I think I would be inclined to go for the NCE PowerCab which seems a good value controller with all the features you would require with a good upgrade path if you want more advanced features.

The NCE Powercab is a good basic controller which can easily be upgraded (at some cost) to be part of a very advanced system. It's not perfect, but no single controller is really.

The cheapest controllers from Hornby and Bachnann are probably best avoided. The Hornby Elite is a full featured controller but is a bit "clunky" in use but has the advantage of two control knobs.

It's best to get your hands on a number of systems and see what suits you. Buying before trying isn't recommended

As has been said before you will get many replies suggesting this or that controller. So there is nothing better than trying as many out before deciding.

For my contribution, I have two Gaugemaster Prodigy controllers which do everything I need them to do on my layouts. Gaugemaster have an excellent repair service for their analogue controllers and although they do not overtly extend this to their DCC ones, I did have a fault with one of mine (bought secondhand). Returned it to them for investigation and I got it back fully repaired within the week at no cost to me.

Backup like that is priceless.

Is their a model railway exhibition coming up near you? If so well worth going at a quieter time and speaking to exhibitors using dcc systems. I would expect most would be willing to let you try it out.

Hi
Initially you need to make a short list.... Consider whether you want a Hand Held Throttle (Controller) or a Desk Style Console or perhaps neither and just wanting total PC control?
Then ask yourself what you want from the system? Total control of all CVs and Programming, or just very basic setting ability or perhaps almost none at all other than a few address number changes.
Finally you need to determine your total budget available.

The above will determine what systems you can look at.

Once the short list is produced, visit dealers and exhibitions where the items on you list are to be found and ask questions about the items ease of use reliability, service etc. Do not be put off by retailers or sellers saying theirs is the best. Then and only then look for a unit within the price you have stated

I personally use NCE but work on layouts that use Lenz & Digitrax - not that keen on Digitrax controillers.
I did purchase a Lenz LH90 to be able to use on the other layouts but yesterday I used a new Lenz LH101 and I am impressed with it but, yes, try them all out at shops and/ or exhibitions first.

NCE DCC, 00 scale, very loosely based on GWR
