I’m in need of help.
I have fitted a Loksound v5 decoder to a Hornby 8F. It has a sound file from South West Digital.

Loco performance is excellent and the sounds are very good indeed. However there is an issue with the chuffs. More often than not there are no chuffs at all, just the sound of a loco simmering or coasting. Occasionally there are six chuffs as the loco pulls away then they cut out and return to the coasting sounds.

The manual has the ‘helpful’ instruction.....”Set up the motor load control CVs 51-55 (info sheet available to download).”

It may as well be written in Mandarin as far as this simple individual is concerned.

Can anyone shed any light on this or offer some values that will work?

That’s a very useful calculator Brian.
The chuffs are synchronised but still cut out after a few puffs. But while they were sounding they were pretty impressive.

Anyone got a suggestion for why they stop and how to fix it?

Steve........these words from my Lok4.0 manual may be relevant...." When accelerating, chuffs sound harsh, while, when the throttle is closed, only rod-clatter is discernible." I use Econami UK Steam decoders and have the same experience. The chuff is motor-load dependent and varies with amount of train being pulled.......HB

There is a similar comment in the manual. The thing is when you bring the loco to a halt then pull away again there are no chuffs at all - that can’t be right.
Once I’ve been accepted to the ESU forum I’ll be able to look for the issue on there.

TTS are the same. The chuff-coast works from the motor bemf, basically load sensing if the motor is working hard or not.

Well this one has beaten me. Tried the suggestions on here and found a few clues on the Loksound forum, even tried Loksound Support in Germany without any significant change in performance of the chuffs.

The model is on its way back to its owner with a detailed description of what has been tried and a YouTube clip showing the fault in action so that South West Digital can investigate their sound file to see if the problem lies there.
