DMU's

#1

Post by Nine Elms »

Good afternoon.

I am in a bit of a quandary regarding decoders in a Bachman Class 108 DMUs. I have recently purchased the said loco and the instructions say that an 8 pin decoder should be inserted into both units and programmed with the same address. As a relative newcomer here is my dilemma; If the units are connected then the decoders will be trying to pull the train apart as they will be set to go forward, or reverse!!!!

Am I being thick?

You would expect that Bachmann have allowed for this in wiring up each PCB, however if there was a problem it is very easy to reverse the direction of travel by a change to CV29 in that particular decoder.......HB

PS.......just a thought, the second car probably is not motorised so the decoder is only to provide the lighting!
Sorry I'm late but I couldn't get my flip-flops to work

Correct the second car only has a function only decoder i.e. to work lighting. http://www.bromsgrovemodels.co.uk/Bachm ... CInstr.htm

I have the Bachman Class 108 DMU and Brian is correct. The second decoder is only for lights.

Good job you didn’t send it back because the second car wouldn’t move on its own.

I have two sets. I installed rhe standard basic Bachmann decoder in both sets in both cars so two standard 8 pin decoders in both, and they work fine. If one used the 2 function decoders like I did they have a pleasing light dimming function which the 3 function decoders did not. I bought my decoders around 2005 to 2007 I think or shortly afterwards... The same time that those DMU's came out.

Take your time when removing the bodies as it is difficult for bits not to break off and need glueing back on again as they are well detailed things those DMU's.

Thank you for the warning about dismantling the body. Have not got my decoders yet waiting for suppliers to send them.

Yes. It is more about holding the chassis as I found myself needing to reglue the odd battery box or things like that. (I can't remember now but I do remember something needing glueing back on).
