Level Crossing Gates

Good evening and a Happy New Year to you all. I hope you are all keeping safe in these strange and testing times.
I've been trying to make progress with my OO layout and have used air dried clay to lay the base for a crossing - it's an unusual spot as the crossing is across a Y shaped piece of track with one end going off to my branch terminus and the other back round the loop. The air dried clay is great and can be sanded - so far so good.
I built a Peco Ratio 509 crossing as I felt I could be flexible in placing the gates. Fiddly to build and not very robust and on fitting one set of gates have irreparably broken because the hinges are miniscule and any kind of pressure at all and good night Vienna!
So three things.
1. Air dried clay works great for unusual crossing locations and can be sanded and painted as well as inscribed with lines for cobbles before drying - hope this helps someone.
2. Cautionary tale - Peco Ratio 509 crossing gates not at all robust.
3. HELP - any ideas please about my crossing gates so I can try an alternative?
Thank you very much.
