I need some help in trying to decipher what I can do with this decoder? I would like motorise my points and as a novice am confused as to how many points/accessories I can operate with a "Select Unit" and a this decoder?
Sorry if it is a dumb question but I need to know before spending cash!

The decoder is designed to operate 4 separate points.
The Select is capable of controlling up to 40 points, so a theoretical maximum of 10 R8247 decoders. However, the number of point decoders will depend on what power supply you are using. As the decoders cannot be powered from a separate power supply, you are limited with what you can achieve.

The Select can only use accessory port addresses 61-99. Most controllers require you to program the Group address but Hornby controllers make this port to group calculation for you.
In the case of the Select connect the R8247 direct to the track output terminals (with the real track disconnected), then address it just as if it was a loco but within the allowed range - i.e. 61 (this addresses all four ports).
Repeat for the next one using address 65,
ditto the third one with address 69,
and so on.
The problem comes if your R8247s are the new updated v2.0 units, which have three modes set in CV33.
Standard mode and two Special modes.
To be able to make best use of these updated units your Select also needs to be updated by Hornby to v1.6 (v2.0 if it is the 2019 face-lifted controller) whereupon it will be able to write CVs 1-255.

What on earth are Hornby thinking about? All their products should be immediately usable by the purchaser. They are after all a "Train Set" manufacturer!
Advanced CV settings are fine for some DCC users, but the "As supplied" settings should be simply a 'Plug and Play' method with an address number that sets the accessory decoder as simply as necessary!
