Solder advice

I need to fix some steel rod through a hole in some brass strip, I am thinking of soldering.
I will be using this to connect point motors to the points.
The only solder I have is normal solder that I use to solder wire to the
rails.
Will this hold ok considering the movement involved?

Need someone who knows more then I do as I just go ahead and try it with what I have. But one bit of advice I can share is to apply the majority of the heat to the steel part and before soldreing, to rub the areas with some abrasive paper or material. Also adding some extra flux helps on occasions.

I have learned a little by watching Tinplate Girl on youtube. It gave me some ideas and I have not tried them yet. I have a more powerful 40W iron ready for soldering tin.
