TTS Chip in a DMU?

#1

Post by Tallpaul70 »

Has anyone tried a TTS Diesel Chip in a DMU model?

If so, what chip did you fit to what model?

Were you happy with the sound?
If not what was wrong with it?

Many thanks

As I believe they only make TTS decoders for large/powerful diesels would they not be a bit overpowering for a DMU?

I suggest possibilities for TTS in DMUs include the Class 20.

Also setting the volume lower than for a locomotive would help!

Positioning of the loudspeaker could also improve the illusion?

The class 20 has a unique sound. Most DMU's sound like a large bus. :)

My Class 108 DMU with sound has gear changes incorporated.
Class 20 has a turbo whine which DMUs don't have normally and no gear changes.

Similar issue in steam, not so much matching the number of cylinders but getting a whistle that approximates to the loco you want to match.
One of the early TTS was a Fowler 2P which would do, at a push, as a substitute for Northern 2 cylinders - that decoder is now as rare as hen’s teeth. Hoping that the newly released J36 May fill that gap.
I have one on the bench but no time yet to fit it.
Always the way.

Apologies for a slight thread hijack but I’ve just tested the new J36 TTS decoder - this may be the one I’ve been looking for as a ‘generic’ northern two cylinder.
As standard it’s quite a ‘deep’ tone but that can be altered by using different speaker characteristics to thin it out a little.
More importantly, the whistle is, what my ears consider, as ‘normal’.
Likely I’ll be buying a few of these. :D

I agree that the steam whistle or the Diesel/Multiple Unit horn is the most difficult thing to match.

That is why I would not use the TTS for a steamer from anything outside the WR for a WR steamer.

Similarly, you could not use a Diesel electric chip for a Diesel Hydraulic loco.

Fair point about the class 20 sound, it is exactly for this sort of info that I posed the question!

A few of the ‘independents’ have sound projects for DMUs but they are £120+ - not exactly bargain basement.
TTS decoders are relatively cheap as their functionality is restricted - only two sounds at a time ie TwinTrack. I am surprised that none of the main decoder manufacturers haven’t followed the lead of an inexpensive, limited function decoder that can have a sound project added, rather than the all the bells and whistles approach. Probably be able to make them smaller so that tank locos could have sound added inexpensively.
Surely not too much to ask?

Agreed Steve!
But how often do you want more than 2 sounds from one loco at the same time?

Re why don't other manufacturers do low cost limited spec chips, I guess that they think that if they can sell all they can make at full price, why do they need to bother?
We need a Henry Ford/Herbert Austin type character to shake things up!
