Digital point clips

#1

Post by SOOTYBRUM »

Hi, on my DCC layout I am finding that the Hornby digital point clips are becoming loose and coming away from the track. . Am I missing something as I am fitting them as I think they should go.
Is there an alternative to these?
I have 4 sets of points and I am controlling them manually by using the Peco Turnout switch module which works fine.
This is my firstever layout at the rip old age of 67!
Thanks in advance

The Hornby electro point clip (2 per point) fit as shown on this link to Hornby Link 1 and fit to Hornby points next to the plastic check rail ...

However the best connection is to solder feed wires (called Droppers) to the rails leading away from the points frog observing correct polarity. Then the clips are no longer needed! :D
This gives the basic idea.. Link 2 Shown has the dropper wires connecting to the rails of the point or just after the point, but even better is to run a DCC bus pair of feed wires around the undersides of the layout and install droppers from the bus to the rails as per this ... Link 3

Brian, rather than soldering. where do you get the plug-in power clips referred to in one of your diagrams. My points are currently stuck down but i can drill holes near to them if required.

I assume they are either Hornby R8242 (see text below) or Peco ST273.
Neither would I seriously recommend!
Soldering is the best option! You can solder wires to the rails outer web area if need be on track that is already laid.

The Hornby power clip comes in two versions. DC and Digital. While they look similar the R602 DC version has an internal capacitor fitted. This MUST be removed before the clip is used on DCC. Then it becomes the same as the R8242 Digital version.
