Cruise ship 'Astoria' to be broken up.

Built in 1948 as the Stockholm for the Swedish America Line, the ship’s legacy includes one of the most infamous maritime disasters of the 20th century.

On 25th July 1956, the Stockholm collided with the Italian liner Andrea Doria off the coast of Nantucket.

The Andrea Doria sank, but the Stockholm, despite severe damage to her ice-strengthened bow, was able to limp into New York with many of the Italian ship’s survivors aboard.

Over the decades, the vessel was rebuilt, renamed, and repurposed under various owners:

As Volkerfreundschaft, a trade union holiday ship in East Germany
As Italia Prima, a luxury cruise ship under Italian ownership
Later renamed Astoria, she operated cruises for UK-based Cruises & Maritime Voyages (CMV)
The ship was in operation until early 2020, when CMV ceased operations due to the global shutdown.

She was then sold to a group of US investors with the aim of preserving her as a historic attraction – a plan that ultimately failed to materialise.

Despite speculation in recent years that the Astoria might find new life as a museum ship or floating hotel, Galloo’s purchase confirms that she will now be dismantled and recycled.

The ship is expected to be towed to Ghent, Belgium, where the recycling process will begin at one of Europe’s most environmentally regulated ship-breaking facilities.

In happier times. Just left Bergen and heading to Tilbury

Been away too long and spending too much money on this critter, a 1960 Valiant I've been restoring bumper to bumper.
Everytime I think I've fixed or replaced the last thing, something new breaks down. Windshield wiper motor, check, kaput.
Rear back up lights, check, kaput. power steering motor, check, kaput. Pressure line that goes to said power steering motor,
kaput. Alternator, check, kaput. Voltage regulator, check, kaput. I installed a nice speaker system with all the guts neatly
installed into the trunk, so as not to clutter the vintage dash. Worked great for about 45 minutes, then set fire to the
dash wiring. Kaput. They told me with a straight face that the vintage wiring shouldn't be a problem for the high power
40 Watt system. Whoops. Now she's in the shop for a failed power steering bearing, they installed the pulley backwards,
damaged taking it off, ordered another replacement, but the firm sent the wrong one.

When it does run, it's an enjoyable ride. I am, however, ever mindful that the brakes are 64 years old, and drive tenderly.

Way back in time when I lived in Leeds I heard about the Greek shipping company Chandris Lines. I was attracted to the white cross on the funnels of their ships. One ship I liked was Queen Frederica. I very nearly booked a cruise on her, but challenges intervened.

Nevertheless I had a 'soft spot' for the company.

The company became involved in the American market. A change of name and merger with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.

We have managed to see and cruise on Celebrity Cruises. A dream realised.
