The BB's just came as BB's - no external pcb, with two wires (blue and red) to be attached, via the resistor (blue wire) to a 12v power supply.
So Im now more convinced they are basically just a flashing LED and each is acting as the beacon.
To the OP: A good clue to this is if the beacons flash together or out of sync. As each flashing LED will have slightly different electronic properties they are unlikely to flash in unison for very long. Those type of LEDs were designed to draw an operators attention to them so would normally be used on their own. To make all LEDs in circuit flash at the same time (like a Christmas tree) then a seperate flash unit would be needed in unison with normal (stable) LEDs.

The beacons do not flash in unison.

Got there in the end - now for lights in buildings

The belisha beacons do start in unison, but slowly get out of sequence(?). The beacons and street lamps have the resistors fitted that they came with, the taxi lamps have 1k resistors - the whole lot is running from a 9v supply. The switch is a "voltage regulator, and whereas the street lights/taxi's come on straight away, the belisha beacons don't start to flash until the voltage is turned up. I will replace the 9v supply with 12v, when the psu arrives. Click on picture for a short video.

Not really paid much attention - are Belisha beacons in sync in the real world?

Yes! Or at least the intention is that they are. Like in the model, they can get out of sync. So out of sync is modelling the real world

No they are not. Normally they are totally independent of the opposite sides one.
Pleased to read you have everything working correctly now
