That pic of the gear boxes reminded me of a question I meant to ask a couple of days ago but forgot. I was deep into the works of a loco that ran ok once moving but was somewhat reluctant to get started. I noticed that it had come from the factory with grease that had started to dry out. I cleaned the gears and lubricated with the normal oil we use for bearings etc. This oil is often mentioned in these forums but I don't remember seeing anything about the correct type of grease to use in gear boxes. The only grease I own would be totally unsuitable for these delicate mechanisms so is there any recommended product we should be using to replace the stuff the factory add? I imagine the grease is preferred to an oil as it would make for quieter running.

i'd have thought it would be a lithium based grease.

There are many makes of gear grease on the likes of Peters Spares. You just need to read what is best for the job.

Yes I can and have done that. I was looking for opinions or comments from members based on their own experiences.

It would seem the Woodland Scenics H656 might be best for the job I previously mentioned. Has anyone used this stuff or is there a better one?

I was trying to find the one I have Terry. It’s in a syringe but the label has come off so no idea what make it is but I can highly recommend it. Helpful as ever
