I fitted a new tip to the iron and binned about a metre of solder off of the roll, and it appears to be working. I have a new roll of solder on order.
Not Lead free hopefully!

Is it possible that the wire you have is made of Aluminium, You can get Ally wire. I have never used it myself. Just a thought.
