That problem is almost certainly a pickup issue. Most likely is dirty wheels and pickups. Clean with a fibreglass pencil and IPA.
Does it cut out at the same part of the track - if so it could be uneven track which can affect short wheelbase locos bearing in mind also you have reduced the number of pickups on the tender.
