I still have my Triang Jinty, I might investigate this weekend and see if the smoke still works. Problem is it won't run on 'modern' track as the wheel flanges are too big.

First of all merry Christmas to everyone hope you’ve all had a lovely day.
My jinty works fine on modern track so all is good there
Got the smoke unit to work as well by basically remaking the heating element
Now this raises the question
Could it possibly be made dcc to where I can turn the smoke on and off ?
If anyone has tried this or know if it’s possible please do let me know

smoke oil is as cheap as chips. I have 3 locos that smoke, and i keep a tad in each. Tis a great sight, particularly, knowing the loco, is Supposed to smoke when running.

It’s brilliant to see the small locos smoking around the layout
Something different about it that just hits home

I think the simple answer to your question is yes it is possible but...

I think those early smoke units took quite a bit of current, so you would need to use the decoder to control a relay (or solid state device) to switch the track power to the smoke unit. It would certainly be an interesting project for these long winter nights.

Take a brave man to convert one. Above my knowledge level, which is not difficult. Have not got round to even converting loco yet.

Got all the free time in the world currently so might as well give it a try

Anyone have a recommended decoder I should use ?

A cheap one, as i reckon the heat from smoke unit, might fry it.
