Geography and geology were my favourite subjects at school - can’t kick the habit. I’m even noted for pausing TV to quiz the memsahib on geology.

Quite right about the last ice age calving up the rocky terrain. But the volcanos came first I believe. We have a lot of volcanic plugs around my part of the world. :D The redness of the Devon soil is volcanic I believe. The Devon volcanic red soil is rich in Iron which is not surprising because the earths core is Iron after all. :)

That all makes sense. Just glad we don’t have any active ones here now.

Post script: I did make the hill, will need to get around to posting a pic soon. And so it remained, and trees, and hedgerows, and grass were added to it. I was never terribly pleased with my rock cuts, but I did my best. After about six months I decided I need the space in the garage more than the hill, so out came the baseboard and the hill into the dust bin. But overall, it was a thrill. One might say a thrill hill.

Mostly North Wales as the rounded stones here were said to come from Scotish glaciers. Our garden wall is made from some of these large rounded stones.

Choose the substrate do not choose a flat colour

Image
Start to add greens, dull ones

Image
Use thicker greens to cover joins

Image
You can add static grass or another grass effect, wood grass is fine as a vase, foam grass is good as a cover, best not add anything over static grass, leave spaces for buildings why waste materials and they can mess with embedding

Image
Dirty the edge of roadies, because that happens in real life, same with streams etc
