Bus and points

#1

Post by Nine Elms »

I am in the process of installing a bus wire and droppers. I have reached the stage where in need to wire up the points. I have read (and re-read) Brain L's book and not too sure how to go about it. I can understand the reasoning but I am lost with the method. If I use a link wire from the rails I am right in assuming that I need to cut away some of the sleeper on the underside of the rail to ensure the points lay flat or is it better to take a direct link from the bus wire?

Hope this makes sense.

As you can see I am a novice at this game, but learning all the time!

It will depend on exactly which make & model of points you are using.

Hi
Assuming Peco Electrofrog points all you do is remove the plastic web that links two adjacent sleepers between the pivot of the switch rails and the frog. That then exposes the underside of the four rails for soldering droppers onto both the stock rails and the inner closure rail each side.

On Insulated points, just remove the linking plastic web between sleepers on the outside Stock rails underside anywhere along the stock rails and solder dropper wires to these outer rails undersides. :D

On ether style of point you do not remove any sleepers.

Brian - Looking at your illustration, your wires linking the stock rails and inner closure rails appear to have wires that would go to the "bus", when I did mine I just linked the two rails. I assume, as illustrated, your guaranteed power to these two rails? Barry

Yes exactly. By extending the two link wires that bond outer stock rail to closure rails each side they act as dropper feeds to the points rails too, so a sort of "2 in 1" job. :D DO NOTE THAT THE MODIFICATION ONLY APPLIES TO ELECROFROG POINTS.
BTW Some actions are needed prior to bonding these rails... So to carry out this modification there needs to be a gap in each closure rail. Peco Electrofrog points except the small Y, 3 way and slips have these factory fitted but are linked out underneath by fine wires which are removed. Also its necessary to have some form of frog polarity switching used too, or the frog area from the closure rail gaps through the frog and out to the Vee rail IRJs will be electrically dead!
