Screen height?

#1

Post by AndyH »

Hi all new to the hobby 😀

Thinking of adding a divider/screen across the board.
How high /tall should the screen be?

Thinking an 8ft wide by 7ft deep board. The 8ft wide will run across one of the walls with 2ft deep by 4ft wide command well. The divider would give an 8x4 main board with through station and right hand side expand into goods yard. A fiddle yard would then sit at the back to set trains up ready to come and swap returning trains over.

I'm not sure on the actual height yet either, (not sure if screen height be reletive to board height) ideally wanted below the window but it's too low I think at 83cm but would allow sitting I guess, I'm young 37 so ducking and bending not an issue. It's also for the kids, youngest being 6 so don't want it too high for him not to be able to reach . Eventually the points will be electrical switches but whilst on floor manually operated at present but already have point motors and switches by looks of thinks.

Sorry if not in right place wasn't sure if board or modelling topic as it's mainly screen height I'm not sure about

Thanks Andy

Surely that depends how high you want it to be. What are you hiding behind the screen. How tall are you. How tall is the tallest person using the layout?

You’ve already answered the question yourself.

Want to hide half the oval to make it seem longer then it is would also be plan twin track with a fiddle yard to take trains on and off. The board will have a well and has easy access to the front as door is well behind where table starts so walk in turn right you'll see the main stage with operator hidden, fiddling with trains at the back before sending them out and round

I don’t really think anybody can help you. Only you know how high it needs to be because only you are there. :)

It has been said in the past that a higher back scene is better - but is this screen going to be a back scene as well? If not then go for a screen that hides sufficiently well what you want to hide ie if you stand in front, can you see what you are trying to hide?
