Attaching backscenes to hardboard

I used double sided sticky tape, no creases or bubbles.

That is good idea teedoubledee. That's a mouthful I think it would solve the bubble problem for sure. You could hold up one top end of the sheet with tape in one corner and work from there. You have done that before so could you tell me do you think it is best to put paper on hardboard flat or would you fix hardboard up first. That may sound daft question but wondered what your thoughts on that are. As yours have probably been up fitted for some time, how have they stood the test of time.

Like Roger I stuck mine down whilst off the layout, flat on a table (and with the help of the missus). I put a strip along top, bottom and sides and for good measure I wrapped it around the edges and stuck that down with normal tape. Probably overkill as this stuff is designed to stop carpets moving round the floor! I used thin ply rather than hardboard (hate the stuff!) as I had an abundance of it.

Thanks very much for your comprehensive help TWD. Thank you taking the time explaining everything so well. Perhaps I should get some 3 mm ply if it is better. Not easy getting anything these days now we are in solitary confinement.

My back scene, using the double-sided tape method, was attached to the boards whilst they were flat on the floor and then the boards attached to the layout. The back scene is just shy of a foot above the layout height. I taped only across the top and let the baseboard hold the lower edge in place. Certainly is wrinkle and bubble free. R-

It would not surprise me RAF if it was the same as diluted polycel in spray can for a huge price and global warming expellent to boot.

I ‘found’ it at work so it was cheap and it smelled like Evostick when sprayed on. Its all gone now and I don’t have back-scenes on the new layout yet, so watching this topic carefully.

Thanks for the heads up on that stuff RAF96. It probably is good stuff but I personally have to stay away from any solvent based products because they play hell with my asthma.
I have to be careful with anything solvent based I even react to room air fresheners. Cant have them in the house.
I think I will go for the double-sided tape idea.

Just to mention that you can get flexiply IE bendable ply rather than the usual stiff boards. 3 or 5 mm thick Not cheap but great for curves in corners.
