I think you are only thinking of modern railways, you should note I used the word ERA in my post, it means the time frame in which the model is set.
I refer you to Wiki if you have no historical knowledge regarding facing points.

Soldering Iron...........as long as it's not PTFE
Usually works for me, cut the end to expose some wire to conduct the heat in, blob of solder & bobs your uncle

An update for 2023 so far, not much in the way of construction except working semaphores for platform starters, inner & outer homes.
Good running session earlier this evening that culminated with 5 loco's in steam!

I have managed to move a tiny smidgen further along by refitting the layout lighting along the back of the main station boards, of course I should have done this before I re-assembled the layout as the rear of the boards are hard up against the wall so ...

A goodly portion of a year has gone by and the layout has moved from Norfolk to Lincolnshire! The new house is in such a state (some emergency plumbing done already and a full rewire next week) that although it has been bolted together in it's new location that's as far as it's likely to get for ...

Hello, your 1st port of call should be whoever sold it to you, is it new or s/h ?
You don't say if it is DC or DCC, if you could identify the loco & controller (with model numbers) it might help.
