I've only ever built 1. It was a circuit in one of the electronics mags. It used a 2n3055 transistor for the output. Worked OK but I much preferred my ancient H & M duetted.

I also built simple DC train controllers (2 off) using instead of 2N3055 I used a MJ2501 mounted on a suitable heatsink. Worked extremely well on an exhibition layouts fiddle yard.

I don’t think there is a way of keeping dust off a layout. Brush with a very soft brush such as a make-up brush is what I do when required.

Information on the location, size and shape of the layout would be useful.

Impossible to keep dust off a layout. Unless covers are hermetically sealed, dust will still creep in and that's before you consider any potential damage, so don't bother.
